CollectorWorth Data & Methodology
Transparency is a core value at CollectorWorth. We believe every collector deserves to know how the market values on our platform are determined. This page details our comprehensive process for aggregating, cleaning, and presenting collectible data, ensuring you have the most reliable information to manage your collection.
Our Philosophy: Accuracy Through Aggregation and Filtering
A single sale doesn't define an item's market value. True market value is a reflection of many recent transactions across multiple platforms. Our goal is to provide a value that accurately represents what a collector could reasonably expect to pay for an item in the current market.
Our system is built on a three-step process: **Aggregate**, **Filter**, and **Calculate**.
Step 1: Data Aggregation
Our platform continuously aggregates millions of data points from the world's most trusted collectibles marketplaces. We primarily focus on completed sales data, as this is the most reliable indicator of true market value.
- Primary Sources: We pull data from leading marketplaces such as eBay, TCGplayer, and other specialized collectible exchanges.
- Data Points Collected: For each sold listing, we capture the item name, sale price, sale date, condition (e.g., "New," "Used"), and grading information (e.g., "PSA 10," "Ungraded") when available.
Step 2: The Cleaning & Filtering Algorithm
Raw data is messy. This is where our proprietary algorithm adds the most value. We apply a series of strict filters to remove data points that could skew the final market value:
- Exclusion of Lots: We identify and exclude listings that contain multiple items (e.g., "Charizard + Blastoise Lot" or "10x Funko Pop Bundle").
- Outlier Removal: We remove sales that are statistically significant outliers (both unusually high and low) to prevent single, anomalous sales from distorting the average.
- Shipping Cost Normalization: Listings with excessively high shipping costs are flagged and removed, as these are often used to manipulate the final sale price.
- Condition Matching: We carefully map listing descriptions to our standardized conditions. For trading cards, we separate "Ungraded" raw card sales from professionally graded card sales (e.g., PSA, Beckett, CGC).
- "Best Offer Accepted" Handling: Listings that sold via a "Best Offer" without a publicly available final price are excluded from our calculations.
Step 3: Value Calculation
Once the data is cleaned, we calculate the final market value for each item and grade.
- Weighted Average: Our primary calculation is a weighted average that gives more significance to the most recent sales. A sale that occurred yesterday has a greater impact on the final value than a sale from 30 days ago.
- Daily Updates: This entire process runs daily to ensure the values on CollectorWorth reflect the latest market movements.
- Price Signal Count: On each item page, you'll see a "Price Signal Count." This number represents how many cleaned, valid sales data points were used to calculate the current market value, giving you a sense of the data's confidence.
A Note on New or Rare Items
For newly released items or extremely rare collectibles with infrequent sales, the data pool may be smaller. In these cases, the market value may fluctuate more as new sales data becomes available. We are continuously working to improve our predictive models for these scenarios.
Our commitment is to you, the collector. We are constantly refining our algorithms and expanding our data sources to provide the most accurate and transparent platform in the world. If you have any questions about our methodology, please don't hesitate to contact us.
